Landforms and Water Shape How People Live
Sage stands at the top of a wide hill with a large map spread out on a wooden table, pointing at mountains, winding rivers, flat plains, and a coastline while a compass and magnifying glass rest nearby.
- Identify four major physical features — mountains, plains, rivers, and coasts — on a map.
- Explain how each physical feature makes certain activities easier or harder for people.
- Compare why more people tend to settle near rivers and plains than on steep mountains.
- Predict where a new town might grow based on the physical features of a landscape.
- Describe one way people have adapted their way of life to match the landform where they live.
Key terms
- Landform
- A natural shape of land on Earth.
- Mountain
- Very tall, steep, rocky land.
- Plain
- A wide, flat area of land.
- River
- Moving fresh water that flows along the land.
Tall Mountains and Flat Plains
Mountains are tall, rocky, and steep. They are hard to farm and hard to travel across, so few big cities sit high up on them. Plains are wide and flat, with rich soil that is easy to plow and plant. That is why many farms and big cities grow on plains. The shape of the land helps people decide where to build their homes.
Rivers and Coasts
Rivers are moving fresh water that people need every day to drink, cook, and clean. Boats can also carry heavy goods along a river like a watery highway. Coasts are where land meets the ocean. Coasts give people fish to eat and harbors where big ships can trade. Many of the biggest cities in the world sit beside rivers or along the coast.
Worked examples
Where would a wheat farm grow best?
- Wheat needs flat land and rich soil.
- Mountains are too steep to plow.
- Plains are wide and flat.
Answer: A wheat farm grows best on the plains.
Why did old cities start near rivers?
- People need fresh water every day.
- Rivers give water to drink and grow food.
- Boats also carry goods on the river.
Answer: Rivers gave water and a way to trade.
Activity
Drag each community description to the physical feature that best explains why people settled there.
Practice
Name two reasons people like to live near a river.
Tell why few big cities sit on steep mountains.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Big cities always grow on mountains.Steep mountains are hard to farm, so most big cities grow on flat land.
- Rivers are only for drinking water.Rivers also water crops and carry boats full of goods.
Check your understanding
Why did many of the world's earliest civilizations build their cities beside rivers?
A map shows a large flat area with rich dark soil. Which type of settlement would MOST LIKELY grow there?
Some students think big cities always grow on mountains because mountains are easy to defend. Why is this idea mostly WRONG?
Which physical feature gives people BOTH access to ocean fish AND the ability to trade with ships from faraway places?
Recap
Today we learned that landforms shape where people live. Mountains are steep and hard to live on, plains are flat and great for farming, rivers give fresh water and travel, and coasts give fish and trade.
