Naming the Parts of a Plant
Medi kneels beside a garden pot, pointing to each part of a small sunflower plant on a colorful diagram while a child leans in to look closely.
- Identify the four main parts of a plant: roots, stem, leaves, and flowers.
- Explain the job each plant part does to keep the plant alive.
- Compare roots and leaves by describing what each part does.
- Predict what might happen to a plant if it had no roots.
Key terms
- roots
- Plant parts that grow underground and drink up water.
- stem
- The part that holds a plant up and carries water.
- leaves
- Flat green parts that catch sunlight to make food.
- flower
- The colorful plant part that helps make new seeds.
Roots Anchor And Drink
The roots are the part of the plant that grows down into the soil. Roots have two big jobs. First, they hold the plant firmly in the ground so wind and rain cannot knock it over. Second, they soak up water from the soil, almost like drinking through a straw. Without strong roots, a plant could not stay standing or get the water it needs to live.
Stems And Leaves Work Together
The stem is like a strong straw that holds the plant upright and carries water from the roots all the way up to the leaves. The leaves are usually flat and green, and they have an amazing job: they catch sunlight and use it, together with water, to make food for the whole plant. The stem and leaves team up so the plant can stand tall in the sun and feed itself.
Flowers Make New Plants
Many plants grow flowers, and flowers are often bright and colorful. Their special job is to help the plant make seeds. After a flower is visited by bees or other helpers, it can form seeds. Those seeds can fall to the ground and grow into brand-new plants. So flowers are how plants make the next generation of plants, keeping their kind growing year after year.
Worked examples
What would happen to a plant with no roots?
- Roots hold the plant in the soil, so without them the plant could tip over.
- Roots also drink up water, so without them the plant could not get water.
- A plant that cannot stand up or drink water would not be able to live.
Answer: It would fall over and could not get water, so it would not survive.
Which plant part makes the plant's food?
- Roots drink water and the stem carries it, but neither makes food.
- Leaves catch sunlight and use it with water to make food.
- So the leaves are the part that makes the plant's food.
Answer: The leaves make the plant's food.
Activity
Drag each label to the correct part of the plant picture.
Practice
Tell which plant part works most like a drinking straw.
Describe one way the roots and the leaves have different jobs.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Roots make the plant's foodRoots drink water and anchor the plant, but the leaves are the part that makes the plant's food from sunlight.
- Flowers are only for looking prettyFlowers are colorful, but their real job is to help the plant make seeds that grow into new plants.
Check your understanding
What is the job of the roots?
Most leaves are flat and green. What do leaves do for the plant?
Which part of a plant is most like a straw, carrying water up from the roots?
Recap
A plant has four main parts that each do a job: roots drink water and anchor the plant, the stem carries water and holds it up, leaves catch sunlight to make food, and flowers help the plant make new seeds.
