Sorting Things That Move Fast and Slow
Atlas the robot stands on a sunny playground, arms wide open, watching a speedy bicycle zoom past a slowly crawling turtle on the path ahead.
- Identify objects that move fast and objects that move slow.
- Compare the speed of two moving objects and say which is faster.
- Sort a group of moving things into fast and slow groups.
- Explain in simple words what it means for something to move fast or slow.
Key terms
- speed
- how quickly something moves from one place to another
- fast
- moving quickly and covering distance in a short time
- slow
- moving gently and taking a long time to travel
- compare
- to look at two things and see how they are different
- finish line
- the spot where a race or trip ends
What Speed Means
Speed is a way of describing how quickly something travels. A fast thing covers a lot of ground in a short time, like a racing car that flashes past. A slow thing covers only a little ground in the same time, like a snail creeping along the sidewalk. Both are moving, but one is much quicker than the other.
How to Decide Which Is Faster
The best test is a fair race: start two things from the same line at the same moment. Watch which one reaches the end first. That one is faster. It does not matter how hard something tries or how big it is. What matters is who gets there first in the same amount of time.
Worked examples
A dog and a turtle both start at the gate at the same time. The dog reaches the tree first. Which one is faster?
- Notice they both started at the same time and same place — that makes it a fair race.
- See who arrives at the tree first.
- The dog got there first, so the dog covered the distance in less time.
Answer: The dog is faster.
Activity
Drag each moving thing into the Fast group or the Slow group.
Practice
Name one thing that moves fast and one thing that moves slow.
Look at a running child and a crawling baby — which one is faster?
Common mistakes to avoid
- Things that start at the same time move at the same speed.Starting together does not mean moving together — the one that reaches the end first is faster.
- Trying harder always makes you the fastest.Speed is about how quickly you actually arrive, not about how hard you try to go.
Check your understanding
A rabbit and a turtle start running at the same time. The rabbit reaches the finish line first. Which one is faster?
Which of these moves SLOW?
A bicycle and a snail start moving at the same time. The bicycle reaches the corner first. Which one is moving faster?
Recap
Speed tells us how quickly something moves. Fast things cover distance in a short time, and slow things take longer. In a fair race that starts together, whoever reaches the end first is the faster mover.
