Loud Sounds and Quiet Sounds
How loud or quiet a sound is can be called its volume. A loud sound, like a booming drum or a fire truck siren, is strong and fills the whole room so you might want to cover your ears. A quiet sound, like a whisper or rustling leaves, is soft and gentle, so you have to lean in and listen carefully to hear it.
Comparing Two Sounds
Comparing means listening to two sounds and deciding which one is louder. A hand clap is louder than a finger snap. A fire truck siren is louder than a purring kitten. The size of the animal or object does not always tell you the volume — you have to actually listen and compare the two sounds to be sure.
Worked examples
Atlas hears a whisper and a hand clap. Which sound is louder?
- Listen to the whisper — it is soft, so you must lean in to hear it.
- Listen to the hand clap — it is strong and fills the air.
- Compare the two and choose the bigger sound.
Answer: The hand clap is louder than the whisper.
