Things Move in Different Ways
Lumi the glowing firefly hovers in a bright playground, pointing at a swing, a spinning top, a rolling ball curving around a cone, and a slide showing a curved path — objects moving in many different ways.
- Name six ways things can move: fast, slow, straight, curved, round and round, and back and forth.
- Match a moving thing to the word that describes how it moves.
- Show with your hand how a thing moves back and forth or round and round.
- Choose the right movement word when you see a picture or example.
Key terms
- movement
- the way something changes its place or position
- straight
- moving in a line that does not turn
- curved
- moving along a path that bends
- round and round
- spinning in a circle over and over
- back and forth
- going one way then returning the other way
Speed and Path
When we watch things move, we can notice two things: how fast they go and what path they take. A race car moves fast while a turtle moves slow. A train on its track goes straight without turning, and a slide sends you along a curved path that bends from the top all the way down to the bottom.
Spinning and Swinging
Some movements repeat in special ways. A spinning top goes round and round, turning in a circle while staying in the same spot. A swing goes back and forth, moving out one way and then returning the other way, again and again. Both are still kinds of movement, even though the object does not travel far across the playground.
Worked examples
A swing moves out one way then comes back the other way over and over. How does it move?
- Notice the swing goes one direction, then returns the same way.
- It repeats this out-and-back pattern again and again.
- That repeating out-and-back pattern is the back and forth way of moving.
Answer: The swing moves back and forth.
Activity
Match each thing to the word that shows the way it moves.
Practice
How does a spinning top move around on the table?
What kind of movement does a train on a straight track make?
Common mistakes to avoid
- A spinning top is not really moving.Spinning round and round is a kind of movement, even when the top stays in one spot.
- A turtle moves back and forth because its steps repeat. The turtle walks forward slowly, which is not the same as swinging back the way it came.
Check your understanding
A swing goes one way, then the other way, again and again. How does it move?
A spinning top turns in a circle over and over. How does it move?
A turtle takes a long time to walk a short way. How does it move?
Recap
Things move in many different ways. They can go fast or slow, follow a straight or curved path, spin round and round in a circle, or swing back and forth out and back. Each of these is a real kind of movement we can watch and name.
