Same Rule for Everyone, Even the Boss
Sage the wise owl stands beside a classroom rules chart, pointing a feathered wing at a line where the teacher's own name is written alongside the students'.
- Define what makes a rule fair using your own words
- Explain what it means for two people to be in the same situation
- Identify when a rule applies to the person in charge
- Spot an unfair rule and explain which part makes it unfair
Key terms
- fair rule
- a rule that treats people the same
- same situation
- when the same things are true for everyone
- equal treatment
- giving each person the same fair deal
- person in charge
- the leader, like a teacher or coach
The Same Situation
Two people are in the same situation when the same things are true for both of them. Everyone who is about to eat is in the same situation, so the rule wash your hands before snack should apply to all of them. If a rule helps some eaters skip washing but not others, that is unfair, because people in the same spot are being treated differently for no good reason.
Even The Leader Follows
A fair rule applies to everyone, including the person in charge. The teacher, the coach, and even the principal must follow it too. If the rule says no phones during the lesson, the teacher cannot play games on a phone while telling students they may not. Being the boss does not put you outside the rules. Leaders following their own rules is a big part of fairness.
Worked examples
Two students both arrive late on the same day. What is the fair rule?
- Ask if they are in the same situation: yes, both late on the same day.
- A fair rule treats the same situation the same way.
- Give both students the same consequence.
Answer: Both students get the same consequence, because they are in the same situation.
The rule says no running inside, but the coach runs inside anyway. Fair?
- Check who the rule should cover: everyone inside the building.
- Check if the leader follows it: the coach does not.
- A fair rule applies even to the person in charge.
Answer: Not fair. The coach is skipping a rule she makes others follow.
Activity
Sort each rule into the FAIR pile or the UNFAIR pile and say why
Practice
Name a rule and explain why it should apply to the teacher too.
Tell why two late kids should get the same consequence.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaders do not follow their own rules.A fair rule applies to everyone, even the teacher or coach in charge.
- A rule is fair if the boss says so.A rule is fair only when it treats the same situation the same way.
Check your understanding
What makes a rule fair?
Two students both arrive late to class on the same day. A fair rule would:
The class rule says 'Raise your hand before speaking.' Who must follow it for the rule to be fair?
Why is this unfair: 'No running inside, but the coach gets to run inside whenever she likes'?
Recap
A fair rule treats people in the same situation the same way, and it applies to everyone, even the leader. Ask two questions: do same-situation people get the same treatment, and does the rule cover the person in charge too?
Reflect
Think of a rule at school that should apply to grown-ups too.
