Needs and Wants
A need is something you must have to live, grow, and stay safe. Food, clean water, basic clothing, and a home are all needs. A want is something fun or nice to have, but you can still live without it. Candy, toys, and video games are wants. Wants are not bad at all. They just are not necessary, so we take care of our needs first.
Making a Choice
We do not have endless money, time, or space. These are called resources, and they are limited. Because resources are limited, we cannot get everything at once, so we have to make a choice. When you choose one thing, you give up another. The thing you give up is called the opportunity cost. If you buy an apple, you cannot also buy the kite, so the kite is your opportunity cost.
