Producers and Consumers Depend on Each Other to Trade
Sage stands in a lively outdoor market, holding a freshly baked loaf of bread in one hand and a bunch of carrots in the other, grinning as she points from a baker's stall to a farmer's cart to show how the two are swapping goods.

- Identify at least two goods and two services that people produce.
- Explain what specialization means and how it makes trade possible.
- Predict what a producer might give up and receive in a fair trade.
- Describe one example of barter and explain why trade can happen without money.
Key terms
- Producer
- A person who makes a good or service.
- Consumer
- A person who uses or buys things.
- Specialization
- Making one thing you are good at.
- Barter
- Swapping goods without using money.
Producers and Consumers
A producer is anyone who makes a good or gives a service. A baker who bakes bread is a producer, and so is a farmer who grows carrots. A dentist who cleans teeth produces a service. A consumer is anyone who uses or buys those goods and services. When you eat a sandwich, you are a consumer. The same person can be a producer at work and a consumer at the store.
Why Trade Helps
Most people cannot make everything they need. A farmer grows great carrots but may not bake bread, and a baker bakes loaves but grows no wheat. When each person makes one thing they do best, that is called specialization. Then they trade to get the rest. Swapping goods directly without money is called barter. Trade lets both people end up with more than they could make alone.

Practice
Name one producer and one consumer you know.
Explain why people specialize and then trade.

Check your understanding
A carpenter builds chairs and sells them at a store. What role is the carpenter playing?
Why do people trade goods and services with each other?
Maria makes honey and trades a jar of it to Ben for a bag of apples. Which statement BEST describes what Maria and Ben are doing?
Recap
Today we learned a producer makes goods or services and a consumer uses them. Because no one can make everything, people specialize and trade, sometimes by bartering goods directly without using any money.
Reflect
When have you been both a producer and a consumer?
